Black Lives Matter

The Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Committee of Bergen County stands in strong solidarity with the nationwide protests and demands for justice; and for the countless victims of brutality perpetrated against Black people throughout our history. Our hearts break and our anger rises at these cruel and torturous murders. We share the demands for an immediate end to police brutality and killings; and a radical reform of our injustice and incarceration system.

Dr. King taught us, “Law and order exist for the purpose of establishing justice; and when they fail in this purpose they become dangerously structured dams that block the flow of social progress.”

The longstanding deeply embedded racist laws and practices that have plagued and distorted our country for 400 years must come to an end. This is not only for justice and equality for people of color but to liberate all Americans to enjoy the benefits of social progress in a fully free society.

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” - Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Committee of Bergen County salutes all the many thousands of peaceful demonstrators who are putting their lives at risk to show their solidarity with the suffering, terrorized Black communities throughout the United States. The pandemic of racism must be stopped.

The MLK Birthday Committee will continue our mission to carry forth and fulfill the legacy of Dr. King.
